King Yao Postad 7 Maj , 2005 Rapport Share Postad 7 Maj , 2005 Hello, My name is King Yao. I am the author of Weighing the Odds in Hold'em Poker (formerly titled Hold'em Brain). Robert Andersson informed me about this forum, and set up an account for me. For anyone that has read my work, I hope you have enjoyed it. As you can see, I do not understand Swedish, I only understand English. I am happy to respond with any questions, comments or suggestions regarding my book or other issues...but please post or email me in english. If you want to make fun of me, then you can use any other European language, I won't understand it! I will try to visit this forum once in a while. If you want to email me, my email is kingyao@comcast.net. I cannot promise I can answer every question in a timely manner, but I will try. Once the American Football season starts (in mid August), I will have less time to devote to poker and online forums. Also, I see there is a link to the Hold'em Brain pdf file. While I don't have a problem with that, I want to make sure everyone understands that link is based on a much earlier draft. I have made many changes since then, and the book was edited for grammar and other issues to make it more understandable (I am not a writer by profession, just a poker player!). Some ideas were deleted because of confusion, other ideas were inserted to make the book flow better. So my suggestion is to buy the book for the best version! I am also setting up a weblog with posts regarding my gambling activities. I just started it yesterday, so there is not much there, but the URL is weighingtheodds.blogspot.com. Thank you, King Yao * Edit of title - QoS * Citera Länk till kommentar Dela på andra webbplatser
gdaily Postad 7 Maj , 2005 Rapport Share Postad 7 Maj , 2005 Hello King Yao. I want to say that I am really happy that you have found your way to this Poker Forum. Best regards Ola Citera Länk till kommentar Dela på andra webbplatser
Henkeman Postad 8 Maj , 2005 Rapport Share Postad 8 Maj , 2005 Welcome King Yao! Nice to see that you have found your way to our forum. I really enjoyed reading your draft and I've heard nothing but positive remarks about your book. I was really surprised to see your book get positive reviews on the 2+2 forums since that's about as biased as you can get, congratulations for writing what must be a really good book (I've only read the draft and liked it a lot, but I'll buy the book since I'm sure it'll be a lot better still) There has been some discussion about your draft here on the forum, but it has only been positive and your chapter on short handed play has often been reffered to as the best text on the subject written so far (and for that you deserve another congratulation). Again, welcome to the forum. I'm sure we can make a thread in english about your book and it's really nice to have the author come by once in a while. (I blame typos and bad english on Jaegermeister. Shots of Jaegermeister may have seem like +EV during the hockey game between Sweden and Canada, but tomorrow I bet I'll feel that they really were -EV ) Citera Länk till kommentar Dela på andra webbplatser

King Yao Postad 8 Maj , 2005 Författare Rapport Share Postad 8 Maj , 2005 Thanks for the nice comments. I have some questions about Sweden. Are there casinos in Sweden? If so, are they run by the government or private companies? And do they offer poker? What games, what limits? I know in England, they seem to play pot-limit games more than fixed limit games, I'm not sure about other parts of Europe. In America, poker has always been a popular game. Most people learn the ranking of hands and the rules of the some of the games when they are children. People often hold poker games in their homes with their friends. So many people think of it as a social event, and it is not looked down upon as much as other gambling games. Is this the same or different in Sweden? Also, how is gambling viewed as in Sweden? Is it viewed as a bad thing? Citera Länk till kommentar Dela på andra webbplatser

So many people think of it as a social event, and it is not looked down upon as much as other gambling games. Is this the same or different in Sweden? Also, how is gambling viewed as in Sweden? Is it viewed as a bad thing? There are four casinos in Sweden, all owned by the government. All spread poker. Limit Texas 100-200 kronor is the "standard" (remove a zero for rough estimate in dollars). They also spread Pot-Limit dealers choise, in Stockholm it is about 7/9 Omaha High, 1/9 Holdem and 1/9 Pot Limit 7stud, with blinds in the 50-100. Poker is viewed as "bad" in the older generation, but is becoming very popular nowadays. Citera Länk till kommentar Dela på andra webbplatser
gdaily Postad 8 Maj , 2005 Rapport Share Postad 8 Maj , 2005 Then of course there are many "private (illegial) clubs" around our country. Citera Länk till kommentar Dela på andra webbplatser
Hjort Postad 8 Maj , 2005 Rapport Share Postad 8 Maj , 2005 In America, poker has always been a popular game. So many people think of it as a social event, and it is not looked down upon as much as other gambling games. Is this the same or different in Sweden? I'm pretty sure that the general understanding of poker is lower in Sweden than in the US. I usually just assume that most people I meet don't understand stuff beyond handranks, if that. It's not something that feels intrinisically Swedish at all. Though there has been a huge upsurge of poker playing in the last 5 years or so, this has mostly been amongst males 12-30. I'm guessing we have a few people on the forum with actual statistics though, so you might get a better answer. Also, how is gambling viewed as in Sweden? Is it viewed as a bad thing? Measured in percentage of income spent on gambling I think we're in the highest spending 10% (possibly quite a bit higher) of the world. The vast majority of that is spent on government-owned lotteries, sports or horseracing. It's viewed as perfectly acceptable to buy a few lottery tickets here and there, but I think it's generally considered suspect to spend a lot of time or money on gambling. If you do so people will generally start thinking about things like addiction. Citera Länk till kommentar Dela på andra webbplatser
eurythmech Postad 8 Maj , 2005 Rapport Share Postad 8 Maj , 2005 This is certainly not something you see every day, an esteemed poker author from across the pond, who I never heard about but who I'll surely look up , stops by to post. As for poker and gambling in Sweden, just to add to what's been said before: Buying a lottery ticket once every sunday for $3,50, or even betting $30 on the horses every saturday is viewed as a very common thing. (You don't risk ruin, but if you're lucky you could become a millionaire!) But if a proffessional player or gambler were to be "outed" in a surrounding of "outsiders" then he'd be faced with a thousand frowns and remarks such as "your luck will end one day", "careful or you'll end up broke" etc. Citera Länk till kommentar Dela på andra webbplatser
King Yao Postad 8 Maj , 2005 Författare Rapport Share Postad 8 Maj , 2005 Thanks for explaining the gambling culture in Sweden. In Taiwan (where I was born, and where I still have many relatives), most people would laugh at the thought of a professional gambler...and relatives would be worried that you will go broke one day. In my family, there have been people who had gambling problems, so its actually a good concern. But as you all know, poker is very much different than other gambling games. I also want to mention that I am just another person. I think I'm a nice guy and I think I am smart, but I don't think I'm above anyone else. I'm hoping you'll never catch me with a superiority complex or an attitude...my wife would be ashamed of me! eurythmech - I love your signature, it made me laugh! toppace Postad 14 Maj , 2005 Rapport Share Postad 14 Maj , 2005 In my preliminary research for the Shorthanded Limit Hold'em book i stole this from your blog King . Although my english is far to finite to say that i know something about that language, i still think one could get the impression that you are considering investing more time writing the future "megabestseller" Good luck! King Yao Postad 14 Maj , 2005 Författare Rapport Share Postad 14 Maj , 2005 Yes, I'm starting to do research on it - mainly because I think a shorthanded limit hold'em book should be able to refer to Poker Tracker and point out what the stats mean. I just started using it and it looks like it has a great deal of information. I have figured out how to import hand history from PokerStars and Party Poker, the next step is Ultimate Bet. It looks like there's a separate program to help grab hands for that site. Citera Länk till kommentar Dela på andra webbplatser
Sactodian Postad 14 Maj , 2005 Rapport Share Postad 14 Maj , 2005 Hi, first of all, I really enjoy your book and your postings. I'm also interested in SH and Poker Tracker. Do you have any ideas/suggestions for autorating different player types? To use numbers from full table is in my opinion somewhat misguiding. King Yao Postad 15 Maj , 2005 Författare Rapport Share Postad 15 Maj , 2005 I am just getting adjusted to reading my own stats. I don't even have enough data on my own play to have it really make sense right now. So it will take me a while to see other people's stats. But my guess right now is that for shorthanded, personally, I won't even bother to check other people's stats. I'd rely more on my own notes and what I remember about the player. Going back to Pokertracker doesn't seem like a good use of time - but that's also because I'll normally have 2 to 4 tables going, so my time is used to go from one table to another. Playing multiple shorthanded tables means I'll lose alot of specific opponent edge, but the combined edge will probably mask the lost of edge at any one table....hope that makes sense. But I've heard there's a software where you can overlay the opponent's stats on the table as you are playing....I still have to check that out...maybe that could be used for what you are asking - I don't know yet.
