PokerStars is launching a Weekly S&G TLB program in 2008 (late January or early February). We want to run the details by you to see if there are any adjustments you would recommend before we get started. Please keep in mind when reading the items below, one of the goals is for the recreational players to have a chance to win.

We’ve segmented our S&Gs into eight divisions by the size of the buy-in. Every time a player cashes in an eligible S&G they are awarded points which count towards the divisional TLB. The top performers on each TLB for the week will be awarded cash prizes.

The top ten for each Leader Board are also awarded a ticket to the $50K monthly triple-shootout, where players from all divisions will be brought together to do battle.

Only S&Gs with 5 to 40 players are eligible. Satellites, Steps and heads-up S&Gs do not count towards this promotion.

The Divisions:

There will be eight divisions broken down as follows:

Buy-in Division Name

$0.01-$2.99 Pluto

$3-$4.99 Neptune

$5-$9.99 Uranus

$10-$19.99 Saturn

$20-$49.99 Jupiter

$50-$99.99 Mars

$100-$299.99 Venus

$300+ Mercury

The Leader Boards:

Each division will have two sub-divisions, one for low volume and one for high volume, a total of 16 leader boards.

Points are awarded for cashing in any eligible S&G, using the MTT TLB formula (http://www.pokerstars.com/poker/tour.../leader-board/).

To qualify for a leader board you need to play a minimum number of qualifying tournaments. For the low volume Leader Board players have to play a minimum of 25 tournaments. To qualify for the high volume Leader Board players have to play a minimum of 100 tournaments. Your score is the average number of points per game over your best 80% of results (i.e. your worst 20% of results are excluded from the average).

Even if you don’t cash in a tournament and receive no points, it will still be counted towards the required minimum. So for example, if you played in 40 x $20 tournaments during a week and cashed in 10 of them collecting a total of 35 points then your weekly score for Jupiter low volume leader board will be 1.09 points - 35 points divided by 32 (32 = 80% of 40).

Prior to reaching a qualifying score, players will be able to view their average, and number of games played, via the PokerStars client.

The Prize Pools:

The prize pools for each division would be as follows:

Division PrizePool PlacesPaidLow PlacesPaidHigh 1stPlace

Pluto $3,000.00 100 100 $150

Neptune $4,000.00 50 50 $300

Jupiter $6,000.00 30 30 $700

Saturn $7,000.00 20 20 $900

Venus $9,000.00 10 10 $1,200

Mercury $10,000.00 5 5 $1,500

The payouts for each division are broken down below:

Examples:

Player A plays 10 x $15 turbo S&Gs. His average is compiled from his best 8 scores (80% of the ten that he’s played). Once he has played a further 15 events, his average will be eligible for the Saturn Low Volume Leader Board. He will need to complete 25 events to be eligible for any prize money.

Player B plays 32 x $50 S&Gs. His average is compiled from his best 26 scores (80% of 32, rounded to the nearest whole number). His score is good and he finishes 4th on the Mars Low Volume Leader Board. He receives $350 prize money for coming 4th in addition to a ticket to the $50k monthly triple shootout.

Player C plays 105 x $3 S&Gs. He is eligible for both the high and low volume Leader Boards of the Neptune Division. He has a great week and finishes 12th ($30) and 1st ($300) on the low and high volume Leader Boards respectively. He wins prize money for both Leader Boards, and also a triple shootout ticket for the top-ten finish.

Player D plays 25 games in the Venus Division (say, 11 x $105 and 14 x $210) and 28 games in the Mercury Division. He finishes in the top 5 on the low volume Leader Boards for both Divisions, so he wins prize money for both, and also two monthly triple shootout tickets (must be used in separate events, but are valid for any S&G TLB monthly triple shootout).

I hope you are okay with exporting the tables of information into a more readable format. My limited experience of posting on 2+2 has prevented me from adding nicely formated tables.

We look forward to hearing your feedback and questions.

Thank you for all of your feedback so far. We have now had a chance to discuss your suggestions and would like to share the revised format with you.

Based on the feedback, we have modified the qualifying criteria:

The low volume leader board will work in 5 blocks of 20 up to 100 games (i.e. 1-20, 21-40, 41-60, 61-80 & 81-100). Each block will be scored by taking the total points for the best 80% of games (so best 16 results combined – that may be changed to either lower the % or remove it, as most players will have more than 4 tourneys where they didn’t score anyway). A player’s best scoring block will count towards the low volume leader board.

We realise this swings the low volume leader board in favour of high volume players, as effectively it gives them five shots at winning. However, the sheer volume of recreational players (that play just about 20 games – 95% of players and 75% of tournament entries) should still see them dominate the leader boards.

The high volume leader board will operate the same way, but using blocks of 100 with no limit on the number of blocks a player can play in a given week. Again, the highest scoring block will count as the high volume score.

For both leader boards, only completed blocks of games will count. Thanks to MATT238 for the original suggestion of using blocks.

We do feel that even with these modifications, while we give high volume players more chances, we still retain the original main objective on the TLB - to attract more recreational players.

There were several questions about why the prize pools were equal for low volume and high volume boards, so allow me to give a couple of reasons why we have taken this decision:

1. As individuals, high volume players pay more rake. However they comprise only a small portion of the S&G playing community (less than 0.05% of players play more than 100 tourneys a week and they generate less than 7% of the tournament entries). Collectively, recreational players pay more rake, and so it only seems fair that they are entitled to an even share of the prize pool.

2. The high volume prize pool will be competed for by a much smaller group of players and so the chances of winning are much higher.

3. High volume players are eligible for both boards.

Pluto will be removed as a division name and replaced with Earth. The divisions will continue to be named from biggest to lowest buy-in in the order of the planets from nearest to the Sun, to furthest away.

The number of divisions, prize pools and payout structures remain as they were in the original post. My thanks to dave_w11 for posting them in table form.

We are aware of the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the formula when applied to this promotion. At this time, we are undertaking further investigations to see just how suitable it is. Among the options is removing or adjusting the buy-in function of the formula to lessen the impact of this factor.

To clarify, points are issued for cashing in a S&G. The MTT TLB Excel calculator is set up to award points for a top 15% finish which does not apply here.

There are a couple of additional items on which we would like to hear your thoughts:

1. Do you have any suggestions for names for the low and high volume leader boards? E.g. 'Open' and 'Pro'.

2. How do you feel about including all S&GS up to the 180-man tourneys? If we were to do this, they would be removed from the MTT TLB.

We look forward to hearing your constructive thoughts on this revised format.

Regards,

Bob
