Regarding legislation which is currently trying to be passed in the US Senate to ban online casino gambling, the PPA (Poker Players Alliance) Phone March on Washington this week was a success, producing more than 3,000 phone calls to the offices of US Senators protesting the online casino ban. However, it was not successful enough to stop Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, a Republican Senator from Tennessee. He is still fervently pushing the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (H.R. 4411) for the Senate to pass, after it already passed in the House of Representatives in July. This is definitely going to be a tough battle among online casinos fans and the US government.
‘The March sent a clear message to the Senate that Americans are passionate about their ability to play the popular game of skill on the Internet. Congress can no longer disregard citizen support for online poker and their freedom to use the Internet,’ said PPA President, Michael Bolcerek. Online casino players feel that they should not be told how to spend their hard-earned money. They feel that they have the right to spend their money as they so choose – which includes playing at online casino sites and gambling with their paychecks.
An AP story indicates that Frist's motivations may be political. Although the two-term Senator is not running for re-election, he may have a bid at the 2008 Presidential elections in his sights. According to the story, he has made this anti-gambling bill a ‘legislative priority’ when he recently discussed the issue in a public forum in Iowa. The Poker Players Alliance is working hard to make sure that Americans can continue to play poker at online casino sites. How the Senate will decide regarding the legalization and regulation of online casino sites within US borders remains to be seen.
